Myspace, Facebook, and Twitter... Oh My!

Social media. It is everywhere. It is the thing that keeps us connected to everyone in our lives. Isn't it weird to think about not having social media?!  It's going to be one of those things I tell my kids some day..."I was alive when facebook and twitter didn't exist!" (Cue dumbfounded faces) Either that or they will be like, "Whats facebook? or You're so old, Mom" Yada, yada, yada.

Social media has been a huge part of my life just like everyone else but I would say, I believe, I was a bit different then the typical young adult my age. What I mean by this is, I was the girl looking up how to write HTML code to make my mysapce more appealing, when I was 15. Laugh all you want! I was proud of that bad boy. I spent hours making everything just right and making sure it was unique and expressed myself as a person, down to the very song!

Now, when facebook came on the horizon I was like that screaming toddler who didn't want to leave her mama. Myspace was comfortable. Myspace was me, and jumping on that facebook bandwagon was not my cup of tea. I wouldn't be able to express myself. Facebook was so "plain-Jane," next to myspace. No color, no music, no scrolling text, no pictures intertwined on the page. I felt like everything I knew was being ripped out underneath me! As my friends quickly starting moving toward the phenomenon of facebook, I reluctantly joined (with a preconceived notion that I was going to hate it.)

At first, it was not smooth sailing but, after awhile I caught on and started to enjoy it. I now express myself by, posting song lyrics, editing every, single picture I post, and updating my cover photo on a weekly basis. I learned the tricks of the trade and then some. I forgot to mention that I managed my American Marketing Association facebook page. I actually increased our traffic to that site quite a bit by adding pictures, descriptive text, and posting interesting statues almost everyday! It's so amazing how you can view the progress of your page and actually see the things that you are doing that are working! Who thought facebook could have so much potential, not this girl that's for sure!

I would say, now, I am a facebook expert. Yep, me and the other 5 million kids my age, right? Well, you wanna know why I stand out? I have a sense for design and creativity and also a drive to be noticed. I am selective when posting things because if it doesn't get recognized by someone or help someone in some way, then what is the point of posting it in the first place? In a professional stand point, the same principle applies. If you aren't posting the right content, in the right way, with the right visuals, you are going to lose your audience. Plain and simple. Now, I have already mastered that skill and apply it to my personal life, it's second nature to me.

Steps to help you get "social media noticed"

1. Write interesting content for your target market. This seems like common sense but I bet you aren't doing it. Sharing blog posts and even writing your own content will make you 10 times more credible to your audience. And if you cater your content to your audience you are able to get down on their level.

2. Write about things that will catch peoples attention and interest them. Post that make them want to read more and engage more with your company are the keys to success!

3. Do your homework. Make sure that the content that you are posting is from a credible and reliable source. The last thing you want is a bogus article posted on your page dragging down your own image.

Lastly, and most importantly....

4. Post things that mean something. Mean something when you post. And people will flock like crazy.
